Highlights from our Autumn Carpentries workshop (2025) on Python and Git
On the 22 and 23 of September 2025 we held our Carpentries workshop on “Python Essentials with Git for Data Analysis” at the Weston Library at Oxford University.
The Weston Library is a superb venue at the heart of the university’s historical area on Broad Street, in Oxford city centre. It is surrounded by the Old Bodleian Library, the Sheldonian theatre, near iconic colleges like Balliol, Trinity and Exeter and with lots of cafes, pubs, and other places to grab food.
During these two days, learners from across several university departments gathered for our course. This included people from the Life Sciences, Medicine, Psychology, Social Sciences, Engineering, Education and Mathematics. It was fascinating to see so many people from diverse backgrounds in the same place.
The lessons were packed with plenty of hands-on exercises and challenges. These were led by our amazing set of instructors and helpers, who skilfully dealt with a wide range of questions and issues and patiently assisted learners throughout the course. The programme we followed is here.
At times, we also had to deal with technical hiccups amongst ourselves ... As The Carpentries would say, there are no mistakes, only “learning opportunities”.
By the end of the two days, we saw plenty of smiley faces and received lots of Thank-You’s. It was also extremely satisfying to see a lot of eureka moments from learners as we helped them navigate through the material.
Some learners’ comments
“Very learner friendly, easy to request for help”
“Clearly set out, plenty of time for troubleshooting, great intro to concepts”
“Good materials, interactive nature, ability to ask questions”
We are looking forward to organising new courses and events around reproducibility. To find out more, follow our socials: BlueSky, Instagram, X/Twitter, join our mailing list, or refer to our main website.
Finally, a huge thanks to everyone involved in the organisation, planning and delivery of the event. These include: Gaurav Bhalerao, Broncio Aguilar-Sanjuan, David Hemprich-Bennett alongside other instructors and helpers, members of the Research Practice team, and the lovely staff from the Weston Library.
